Standard & Criteria for Certification

Bronze Award
Brain Awareness

  •  “Brain health & development” should be highlighted in the academic year plan or concern
  • 95% teaching staff should have participated in minimum 3 days Initial Training on “Brain-Based Teaching” conducted by International certified/Re-certified Brain-Based Trainers
  • Minimum 10 books (with title variety) related to “Brain-Based Education” are in library stock for staff reference

Silver Award
Brain Friendly

  • “Brain health & development” should be highlighted in yearly plan or concern
  • School should have development plans and schedule on infusing “Brain-Based Education” in 3-5 years period
  • Not less than 20 “Brain Friendly” guidelines and suggestions for staff concerning different aspects (at least on classroom teaching, discipline & counseling, co-curricular or physical activities)
  • 95% teaching staff should have participated in one-year training on “Brain-Based Teaching” conducted by International certified/Re-certified Brain-Based Trainers (Or 4 days training on “Brain-Based” related topics conducted by International certified/Re-certified “Brain-Based Trainers”)
  • Minimum 20% staff have been certified as “HK Brain-Based Teacher”
  • Minimum 50 books (with title variety) related to “Brain-Based Education” are in library stock, half for staff and half for students as learning reference

Gold Award
Brain - Based

  •  “Brain health & development” and related aspects are clearly stated in school vision, mission, ethos, as school’s education philosophy or ideology
  • “Brain-Based” guidelines and suggestions are printed in Teacher’s Handbook for all aspects
  • All policy, proposals, planning should include “Brain-Based Principles”, reports and other administrative document should reflect elements of “Brain-Based Principles” or related issues.
  • Policy should be made and reflected in administrative document for assuring the implementation of “Brain-Based” principles & strategies.
  • 95% teaching staff should have participated in one-year training on “Brain-Based Teaching” conducted by International certified/Re-certified Brain-Based Trainers (Or 4 days training on “Brain-Based” related topics conducted by International certified/Re-certified “Brain-Based Trainers”)
  • Minimum 50% staff have been certified as “HK Brain-Based Teacher”
  • Minimum 5% “HK Brain-Based Trainer” certified by International certified/Re-certified Brain-Based Trainers are employed and takes the role of “Brain-Based Staff Development Leader” to coordinate the development or routine practice and applications towards the criteria of Brain-Based School, the percentage should gradually increase to 10% in 5 years’ period
  • Academic leaders and professional development coordinator should have the qualification of “Brain-Based Teacher” at least
  • Not more than 10% Sunday/public holidays should arrange duties for staff
  • Staff should not work over 6pm in school/outside school more than 30% school days in a year. Within 5 years reduced to 20%.
  • At least 3% of books & magazines purchased by the library are related to “Brain” or “Mind” Topics

  • Within an academic year, minimum two 30 minutes sessions for teachers to share their experience on the application of “Brain-Based Teaching” at staff meetings
  • Issue/event/experience sharing on “Brain” or “Brain-Based” topic/theme should be published on school report or newsletter of any kind at least twice within an academic year

  • Minimum two 30 minutes sessions for staff to share their experience on “Brain-Based Teaching” annually
  • Issue/event/experience sharing on “Brain-Based” topic/theme should be published on newsletter of any kind at least twice within a year
  • Review of the application of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” should be made at least twice a year in panel meetings
  • Each teacher should review the application of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” and fill in the strategies check list for frequently / often / seldom / never applied categories at the end of the 1st or 2nd academic term or any suitable period within that school year
  • The application and/or effects of “Brain-Based Education” should be highlighted in annual school report

Gold Award
Brain - Based

  • Minimum two 30 minutes sessions for staff to share their experience on “Brain-Based Teaching” or their action research on “Brain-Based Teaching” annually
  • Issue/event/experience sharing on “Brain-Based” topic/theme should be published on newsletter of any kind at least twice within a year
  • Each teacher should keep their record/Journal for 12 weeks of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” applied & reflect on the application, trainings on “Brain” or “Mind” related topics, in a personal portfolio
  • Research or case studies on “Brain-Based Education” should be conducted once in 3 years and published in professional journal or public media
  • Professional sharing in education field on the application of “Brain-Based Education” in the name of school should be made once every two years (HK or International events, seminars, conferences)
  • Open to other educators, schools’ visit for lesson observations and professional sharing minimum twice a year
  • Review on the applications of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” should be made twice a year in panel meetings
  • The application and/or effects of “Brain-Based Education” should be highlighted in annual school report
  • Questionnaire and feedback letter for each mentee to reflect on the mentoring system and mentor’s (Experienced Hong Kong certified Brain-Based Trainers/Teachers) contribution

Minimum 2 times being done at the beginning, middle or the end of the school year. (* Minimum 8 items’ questionnaire)

  • Brain health habits development’s assessment should be designed for teachers and parents to understand students’ living pattern (e.g. sleep pattern, physical exercise, diet, diaphragmatic breathing). Minimum 2 times being done at the beginning, middle or the end of the school year.   (* Minimum 8 items’ questionnaire)
  • “Brain Performance Development Report” should be issued parallel to the academic report reflecting on the improvement of the students (e.g. performance on attention, concentration and relaxation, as well as their emotion regulation, state management, memory, etc)

  • Every student should have recorded their “Brain Health Habits Development” or related information in a portfolio
  • Quiz or test for assessing the understanding of “Brain-Based” knowledge of different level of students
  • Brain health habits development’s assessment should be designed for teachers and parents to understand students’ living pattern (e.g. sleeping pattern, physical exercise, diet, diaphragmatic breathing). Minimum 2 times being done at the beginning, middle or the end of the school year.   (* Minimum 8 items’ questionnaire)
  • “Brain Performance Development Report” should be issued parallel to the academic report reflecting on the improvement of the students (e.g. performance on attention, concentration and relaxation, as well as their emotion regulation, state management, memory, etc)
  • “EEG Brainwave Scan” is used to test students’ statistic & dynamic performance parallel to academic report issued

Bronze Award
Brain Awareness

  • 5 sets of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” are chosen to be the focuses of lesson observation involving 50% of staff (either appraisal or peer observation) within a school year

Silver Award
Brain Friendly

  • “Brain-Based Teaching” should be the focus of lesson planning and be discussed in panel lesson planning sessions
  • 10 sets of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” are chosen to be the focuses of lesson observation involving 100% of staff (either appraisal or peer observation) within a school year
  • “Brain-Based Teaching” should be one of the focuses for appraisal and official lesson observation assessment
  • Every teacher should tape one lesson for demonstrating at least 10 sets of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” being successfully applied within a school year (10% teacher’s tape will be chosen randomly to be inspected by external Brain-Based trainers for verification)
  • Guidelines for all staffs (including janitor staff) avoid/reduce interrupting lessons (e.g. calling kids, distributing stuffs, collecting materials, etc)
  • Provide Talks on “Brain-Based Learning” or related topic for students, minimum once a year

Gold Award
Brain - Based

  • All subjects’ curriculum should be designed or delivered based on “Brain-Based” principles or strategies should be highlighted in administrative document
  • Have curriculum on the “BRAIN” and / or “Brain-Based Learning” for each level of students
  • “Brain-Based Teaching” should be one of the focuses for appraisal and official lesson observation assessment
  • Mentoring scheme are built to support newly appointed/recruited teachers, including workshops conducted and lesson supported by “certified or recertified” Hong Kong Brain-Based trainers”
  • 80% panel heads should have the “Hong Kong Brain-Based Teacher” certification and be certified/re-certified as “Hong Kong Brain-Based Trainer” in 5 years’ period
  • Every teacher should tape one lesson for demonstrating at least 15 sets of “Brain-Compatible Strategies” being successfully applied within a school year (10% teacher’s tape will be chosen randomly to be inspected by external Brain-Based trainers for verification)
  • “Brain-Compatible strategies” video clips data base are built to collect good teaching demonstrations, and each “Brain-Based Teacher” should be responsible for at least one contribution per year
  • Lesson observations and after lesson discussions will be provided for 10% teacher (Including Brain-Based Trainer, Brain-Based Teacher, and others) for verifying their skills and knowledge acquisition. (Chosen randomly) *If teachers being randomly chosen to be observed can’t reach the basic “brain-based teaching” standard, another 20% of teachers will be randomly chosen to be observed. Over 10% of the teachers being randomly chosen can’t reach the basic standard/requirement, the school will not be able to maintain its certification as “Brain-Based School”.

Bronze Award
Brain Awareness

  • “Brain-Awareness” recommendations and suggestions for staffs, students and parents (e.g. highlighted in students and staff handbook, school-based designed leaflet, website materials, …). Once in an academic year minimum.
  •  Offer talk/workshop/seminar for parents on “Brain-Based Education” related topic at least once in an academic year.

Silver Award
Brain Friendly

  • Allows students drink water and include diaphragmatic breathing in lessons
  • Suggestions & recommendations for teaching staffs on “creating ideal brain-conducive environment for learning” (e.g. safety, lighting, natural light, temperature, sound effect quality of PA system, etc)
  • At least one member in counseling team gained the “Hong Kong Brain-Based Teacher” certification/recertification
  • “Brain-Awareness” recommendations/suggestions for parents through leaflet, website, or specific section in student’s handbook
  • 50% students’ parent at least attended one talk, workshop or seminar on “Brain” related topics within their child/children education in school
  • Catering & food provided in school will be based on “Brain Health” principles
  • Peripherals for increasing the awareness of “Brain-Based Education”
  • Provide 3 times 30 minutes or above physical exercise opportunities for 95% or above students every week during the school term. (e.g. 2 P.E. lessons plus an extra/co-curricular activity), or with Brain-energizers during school days

Gold Award

  • Catering & food provided in school will be based on “Brain Health” principles
  • Peripherals for increasing the awareness of “Brain-Based Education”
  • Provide 3 times 30 minutes physical exercise opportunities for 95% students every week during the school term. (e.g. 2 P.E. lessons plus an extra/co-curricular activity), or with Brain-energizers during school days
  • Whole-school event related to “Brain” should be organized once every two years for increasing teachers, students & parents’ awareness
  • Channels will be provided for parents to feedback on “Brain-Antagonistic” cases. All cases will be reported to school authority. If the monthly number of reported cases continuously increased in 6 months, or 30% cases repeated, investigation procedure will be activated for reviewing the certification.
  • Every student should have a “Brain Quotient” report for teachers and parents understanding their weaknesses and strengths, as well as tailor-made plans for improvement
  • Every staff should have a “Brain Quotient” report for understanding their own weaknesses and strengths, as well as tailor-made plans for self-improvement
  • 95% staff should have been trained to interpret the data of “Brain Quotient Report” and 10% staff have the qualification of consultant level
  • At least one member in counseling team gained the “Hong Kong Brain-Based Trainer” & “Hong Kong Brain Quotient Report Consultation” certification, and providing counseling service according to student’s BQ report
  • Subsidize or seek for subsidy for minimum 2% students and 5% teachers for Neurofeedback training to improve the health, efficiency and effectiveness of their brain each year
  • 95% teachers have attended the “Brain-Based Strategies/Approaches for Handling Learner Diversity –SEN & Gifted Learners” workshop

APPLICATION AND RECOGNITION PERIOD IN 2023 TO 2024:

  • May – 15 September 2023 for new application and December 2023 or at our 4th International Brain and Mind Expo 2023 for Recognition/Award announcement.
  • Certification validates 2 years from issue date.
  • Application for recertification starts in May – 15 September 2023 and announces in December 2023.

Brain-Based School Certification Process

Brain Awareness

1. Schools submit the application form as well as the handling charge (Has certified/re-certified international Brain-Based consultants in own city/country, suggested to be USD1,500; For schools located in a region without certified/re-certified international Brain-Based consultants, suggested to be USD3,500 – the extra cost is for hotel or travelling expenses for the consultants)
2. Institute/Certification Office admits and provides a checklist/steps for schools to follow
3. Schools submit all documents/videos/audios/evidence for certification on or before deadline
4. Institute/Certification Office checks all documents/evidence and approving
5. Certified/Recertified International Brain-Based Consultants (recognized by Jensen Learning) visit the school and interview related persons (e.g. principal, teachers, parents) for clarification (0.5 day)
6. Certified/Recertified International Brain-Based Consultant report and propose for the certification
7. Institute/Certification Office endorses the certification
8. Application Schools will be notified of the result
9. Successful being certified schools need to pay certification fee (USD1,000) per year
10. Successful being certified schools have the rights to produce the “Badge” of Brain-Awareness School (Size, materials, and figure will be provided by Institute/Certification Office) and post at the entrance or General Office; logo can be printed on school documents
11. Details and documents of the certified school will be posted on “Brain-Awareness School” page of IBME website
12. If the certified school is complained by teachers/parents, the complaint will be transferred to school. School needs to investigate and report to Institute/Certification Office within a month. If the complaint carries on, Brain-Based Consultant will interview the related persons for investigation.
13. If more than 5 complaints were verified within 2 years’ certification period, complaints should be considered for recertification. The number of verified complaints reaches 10, all complaints details will be posted on “Brain-Awareness School website.
