Brain-based Learning (BBL) is a theory of teaching and learning strategies based scientifically on the latest neurological research on human brain development and functioning, and how they are related and affected by different external environments. Related teaching and learning strategies are developed and deployed to enhance our approach to teaching.
Our school introduced a “brain based education” in 2015, referencing the characteristics of children’s brain development to design teaching strategies that align with brain development. This approach encourages students to engage in interactive learning through collaborative activities and group discussions, enhancing their learning motivation.
Building on children’s high engagement and learning motivation in the classroom, our school adopts a progressive approach to foster the development of higher-order thinking skills. Through open-ended questioning, we encourage students to engage in multi-perspective thinking and express their ideas, thereby developing creative and critical thinking.
Subsequently, sixteen Habits of Mind were introduced. These “Habits of Mind” serve as tools for “learning to learn” skills. Teaching is integrated with challenging “thinking activities” to deepen children’s understanding of these habits. When children master these sixteen Habits of Mind, they can make appropriate judgments and decisions when dealing with problems in daily life.
